nevernotmusic is a collection of 12 scores written by Udita Upadhyaya
Each score is written as love letter, a witness, a gift of permission to another Chicago artist. In fact, each phrase, each visual and textual gesture in the scores attempts to be a gift of voice, ears, generosity and belonging. The scores were exhibited at Roman Susan Gallery in the winter of 2018. Each score was performed by the original giftee at this installation.
Now, working with Match Books, the artist has complied this collection of scores into a book.
Each book in this edition of 50 is personalized for the recipient with a short handwritten letter/score.
The book has been acquired by: Joan Flasch Artist’s Book Collection, at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, University of Chicago’s Rare Book Collection, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago’s Artist's Books Collection.
Match Books (est. 2015) is a small publishing project operated by Lauren Zallo out of Chicago, IL. Match Book publications range widely from collaborative photo conversations to poetry, from fiction to artist monographs. This project serves as a way for her to be able to collaborate with artists / friends whose work she admire, while producing intimately sized books for others to enjoy.
